The Studio will no longer appear at Apple TV’s press day next week, following the news of Catherine O’Hara’s death.
Apple TV is hosting a press day on Tuesday at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The Studio was scheduled as one of the panel’s discussions until O’Hara’s passing. On Friday afternoon, Apple TV sent out an update to the press announcing that they have respectfully bowed out. The event, which promotes TV shows and movies for the year and beyond, had only been announced to the press.
O’Hara died Friday at the age of 71 at her home in Los Angeles after a brief illness, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed. The two-time Emmy winning actress was known for roles in Schitt’s Creek, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Studio, among many more.
The actress earned an Emmy nomination for best supporting actress in a comedy series for season one of The Studio. O’Hara was set to reprise her role as movie executive Patty Leigh in season two, which began production earlier this month.
After she died, The Studio’s cast, crew and producers shared their condolences.
Seth Rogen, who stars as movie studio head Matt Remick and also co-created the series, shared an emotional post on Instagram. “I told O’Hara when I first met her I thought she was the funniest person I’d ever had the pleasure of watching on screen,” Rogen wrote. “Home Alone was the movie that made me want to make movies. Getting to work with her was a true honour. She was hysterical, kind, intuitive, generous … she made me want to make our show good enough to be worthy of her presence in it. This is just devastating. We’re all lucky we got to live in a world with her in it.”
Apple TV and Lionsgate shared a joint statement, “We are all heartbroken by the loss of Catherine O’Hara. An undeniable legend, icon, and incomparable talent, Catherine elevated every project she was a part of, including the singular genius she brought to her role on The Studio, and every transcendent performance she gifted to us. Her artistic accomplishments will forever bring humor, light, and love for generations to come, and her brilliance and generosity of spirit touched everyone around her.”
“We are at a loss for words at the passing of our friend Catherine O’Hara. She was a hero to all of us, and we pinched ourselves every day that we got to work with her on The Studio,” the cast and crew of the series shared in a separate statement. “She was somehow classy, warm, and hilarious all at the same time. We’re unbelievably saddened she is gone and send our deepest sympathy to Bo and all her family.”
