One question going into Lee Cronin’s The Mummy: how will it distinguish itself from all the other, unrelated Mummy projects of the past?
There is now an answer, with the new trailer revealing that the film centers on a family who has been grieving the disappearance of their daughter eight years earlier in Cairo. Suddenly, they get a call from officials revealing she has been found … but is different.
“It’s very important you fully prepare yourself for what you are about to see,” a doctor tells the parents before they are reunited. “No sudden moves. No loud noises.”
It turns out, Katie has spent the past eight years in a 3,000-year-old sarcophagus and has been transformed into a living mummy-like creature. “Don’t worry grandma, it’s fun to be dead,” she says at one point.
Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace and Veronica Falcón star in the New Line feature, which Cronin wrote and directed.
Cronin revived the Evil Dead franchise with Evil Dead Rise, which grossed 147 million globally in 2023. He came on the scene with the 2019 feature The Hole in the Ground, which bowed at Sundance.
James Wan, Jason Blum and John Keville produced The Mummy along with Cronin, who was joined on the movie by director of photography Dave Garbett, production designer Nick Bassett, editor Bryan Shaw, costume designer Joanna Eatwell, composer Stephen McKeon and casting directors Terri Taylor and Sarah Domeier Lindo.
The Mummy has an April 17 release date.
